Salomé Lamas & Mónica Savirón – Biographies

Salomé Lamas (b.1987, Lisbon) studied cinema in Lisbon and Prague, visual arts (MFA) in Amsterdam and is a Ph.D candidate in film studies in Coimbra. 

 

She is the author of ‘The Community´(2012), ‘Encounters with Landscape 3x’ (2012), ´VHS: Video Home System’ (2010-2012), ‘Theatrum Orbis Terrarum’ (2013), ´Le Boudin’ (2014), ‘The Tower (2015)’, ‘Mount Ananea (5856)’ (2015) among others art projects. Her debut ‘Terra de Ninguém’ (2012) (En. ‘No Man’s Land’) premiered internationally at Berlinale (Forum) and was released both theatrically and on DVD in Portugal, France and Spain. She is the author of two other feature films ‘Eldorado XXI’ (2016) – Berlinale (Forum) world premiere and ‘Extinction’ (in finalisation).

 

Her work has been awarded and showcased both in art venues and film festivals such as NIMK Netherlands Instituut voor Mediakunst, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, BAFICI, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Mar del Plata Film Festival, FIAC, Rome Film Festival, MNAC National Museum of Contemporary Art – Museu do Chiado, DocLisboa, Documenta Madrid, MoMA’s International Festival of Nonfiction Film, Guggenheim Bilbao, Pacific Film Archive – Berkeley University, Harvard Film Archive, Museum of Moving Images NY, Jewish Museum NY, Fid Marseille, Arsenal Institut fur film und videokunst, Cinema du Reel, CalArts, UCLA Hammer Museum, Serralves Contemporary Art Museum, La Casa Encendida, CPH:DOX, Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève, Bozar – Centre of Fine Arts, TABAKALERA, Les Rencontres Internationales – Nouveau Cinema et Art Contemporain etc.

 

She collaborates with the production company O Som e a Furia and is represented by Miguel Nabinho Gallery – Lisboa 20.

 

Lamas was awarded fellowships at Rockefeller Foundation-Bellagio Center, Bogliasco Foundation, a MacDowell Colony, a Yaddo, DAAD Berliner Künstlerprogramm, etc.

Mónica Savirón is an independent curator, writer, and experimental filmmaker. Originally from Madrid and currently based in New York City, her work explores the cinematic possibilities of sound and avant-garde poetics. 

 

As a curator, she has organized shows at the Museum of the Moving Image, Microscope Gallery, UnionDocs, and Anthology Film Archives. Her essays about avant-garde and artists’ cinema have been published internationally. For ten years, she also directed a weekly radio show on documentary and experimental films while producing the television show Documenta2
 


Her film Answer Print (2016) had its World Premiere at the 54th New York Film Festival. This work, meant to disappear over time, is a reflection on deteriorating color celluloid, and the world that it portrays. Broken Tongue (2013) is a tribute to conceptual poet and performer Tracie Morris. Winner of the Best Film award at FRONTEIRA Film Festival in Brazil, it has been shown at more than fifty major festivals and art venues around the world. Her previous video, To Begin With (2012), had its World Premiere at Experiments in Cinema Festival.
